Do I have to pay for whole lease period though I vacate earlier than termination date with adequate notice period?

I really need to know whether I have to dish out money for the period I am not staying and for which ample notice period is served. A penalty could be considered but is it the rule that I have to pay for the whole period of lease even though I vacate it earlier than date of termination with adequate notice period?

at woodcliff the answer is yes and the law is on their side according to my lawyer

this backyard is nasty (this is not the only one) a pit bull lives here and the lease says no dogs more that 30lbs this dogs barks ALL the time and at kids too. Yards should be kept up with and its not. ( you cant see but there is dog poo everywhere).
