should I pay for a carpet replacement in an apartment where I lived for 2 years?

Because we just received a letter after we move out to another apartment in the same comunnity asking us to pay for a carpet replacement and we have to pay $395. I think it's unfair.

this backyard is nasty (this is not the only one) a pit bull lives here and the lease says no dogs more that 30lbs this dogs barks ALL the time and at kids too. Yards should be kept up with and its not. ( you cant see but there is dog poo everywhere).
