Looking for a place in DC area -- need a break!!

Asked 108 days ago

I just can't believe how expensive places are here and all the bad reviews! Can someone tell me some good places and help me catch a break??? I am a single (no kids), 48-yr old prof male working for the federal govt. (contractor) in DC. I own a home in Kentucky I don't want to give up just yet so I'm looking for a simple, furnished (or unfurnished studio/1BR with basics), preferably near metro and in decent neighborhood. If I like it I plan to stay at least a year but for now would like monthly or up to 6 months lease. I'm quiet and have excellent credit. No drugs, criminal record (govt security clearance), wild parties.

My ideal place would be to housesit for a few months, otherwise a 1BR or efficiency for under $1000 including utilities and some furnishings, nice neighborhood, walk or short drive to Metro, ample parking, W/D in unit, decent landlord. Am I dreaming? Well, I can tell you my Mom lives in Las Vegas and is leaving tomorrow for a 4-month trip. She wanted someone to housesit her 2-BR condo and watch her two cats and was going to let a casual acquaintance LIVE THERE FREE but the guy insisted on at least paying utilities. (If you don't believe me I'll give you the guy's phone # and you can ask him.) So why can't I catch a break like this!?!

I'm open to roommates or creative situations but it would have to be just right. I'm probably more of a suburbs than inner city guy but some of the areas I like so far are Crystal City, Mount Vernon, parts of Alexandria, Glenmont, Bethesda, DC NW. NOT interested in NE or SE DC or Prince George's County.

Please provide feedback here or better yet e-mail me at reapthemandweed@yahoo.com.

Thanks!!!
