Can I Break My Lease If My Appartment is Infected with Bugs?

Asked 187 days ago

I have signed a 6 month lease have moved in last week. I am facing issues with Insects and Bugs right from day 1. I have intimated the management and they had got a pest control done but nothing has worked. Can I break my lease because of the stress I face? What options to I have? I am also open to moving to a different appartment.

If they are trying to rid the pests I doubt you can walk away from the lease. You mentioned moving to a different apt, which may be a good option for both you and the leasor. Perhaps contact them again with a written letter saying you want the bugs out in 7 days or want a to tranfer to a comparable unit (w/o bugs though).

The answer to this question is largly dependent on local and state laws but I think it is safe to say that "stress" is not a reason why a lease can be ended.

I also hate to tell you but it takes more than a week to get rid of bugs in an occupied building. I own a large apartment building and when we bought it we spent months and thousands of dollars to get rid of roaches. The hardest part of getting rid of the damn things is that there will always be a few tenants who will not cooperate and their apartments become a safe haven for these damn things.

Bug Bombs do not work. If you have a hardware store near buy go and buy Max Force. You can get a very easy to use injector and treat your apartment yourself. Present the receipt to your landlord for reembursement. This stuff is great.

You should also realize that it isnt always a managers fault if there are bugs. Most of the problems I have had after we exterminated our building is that people move in and bring them with them.

Moving into another apartment in the same building isnt really an option. Bugs travel.
