how much is it reasonable to be able to hear between floors?
We hear everything. When our up and down neighbors come to bed, we hear their conversations, in normal tones of voice. Our complex manager said this is normal for the area (Hagerstown, MD), but I have lived in apartments in the midwest for 25 years and never heard so much between units. It feels like they forgot to put in a layer of something between the floors.

I think it would be more correct to ask"how much is toleratable?" Ive actually heard my upstair's nieghbor pass gas. For a building built in 1964 , could happen. However if there is not any sound board present between the 2 apt.'s there is not really any way to make them install it. If your lease agreement state's your entitlement to "peace & quiete enjoyment" it might be possible to use the noise as a breech of contract on the part of the landlord which could get you out of the lease so you could move.
