In almost every contract you are bound by "Joint Obligation" which basically means you can get in trouble for your roommate not paying. Apartment communities will not seperate you as individuals. The apartment owes the rent, not the individual.

You are binded together on 1 contract. If one fails or violates the lease, the entire household suffers.
