Considering Moving In

Asked 147 days ago

I am considering Alterra, and I have a couple questions:

1. From the reviews on this site there was a lot of complaints about noise. I currently live in the Back Bay on Beacon Street is the apartment noisey in general or just noisey for a suburban apartment.

2. The office told me about a free shuttle that takes you to Haymarket in the morning and will pick you up in the evening. What's the deal with that?

3. The leasing office told us to "hold out" until the month before we move-in to agree to a lease in order to receive the best deal. Was this true for anybody elses experience?

4. The cable and internet are free, but are they reliable?

5. What are your monthly rates for electric, heat, and hot water?

6. I am going to be living alone, how safe do you feel in your unit and around the complex?

Thank you. I love the complex, but the reviews on this site are making me hesistant. Just looking for some facts.

1, The construction isn't the greatest and noise can be moderate to very bad depending on neighbors. My first year was awful next year I had quieter neighbors and it wasn't to bad.

2. Don't know about shuttle I drive.

3. Don't know about waiting for best deal

4. Cable, Internet and parking were free when I moved in but that was only for the first year. From then on I have been paying for it. It is now all bundled into my rent

5. Electric runs between 30 and 40 a month heat can run 40 to 50 in winter. But I find the heating system very noisy and in one bedrooms it is difficult to sleep.

6. Safety is not an issue.

1. Construction noise starts every morning. It stinks. I don't hear the neighbors too much, unless they are having a party.

2. They do have a shuttle. I have never used it.

3. We got a deal when it was first built and they were still trying to get people in, so we don't have a good idea of when to get deals. I do know that every time we've renewed, I negotiated with them and got an extra month for free.

4. Internet is good, but it's shared so it gets slower at night and on weekends - still fine for normal use though, just don't do big downloads during those times. The standard cable is not good quality, but the cheap upgrade to "real" DirecTV will fix that, plus give you more TV options.

5. Our electricity is usually between $80 and $100, but we leave a lot of things on all the time (computer, etc.). Gas is cheap. Water is free.

6. Mostly fine, late nights there will sometimes be odd groups of people hanging out in the parking garages. Also, they use the fobs for access to the building, but if you kick the doors they will open. The magnets aren't strong enough to hold the doors shut against force.

The walls are paper thin here and you hear all the noise from your neighbors. Teenagers that don't live here hangout out by the basektball courts all night, wise mouthing residents when they walk by. Management does nothing to enforce any rules here, they tell you to call the police. Several of the side doors that are suppose to allow access with a key-pass are broke so anyone can walk in these side doors at any time they want. Security is non existant here. Several cars are getting broken into each week.
