The metro is about a 15 minute walk (I think I clocked it at just under 1 mile), straight down Old Georgetown to the Bethesda stop on the redline. I used to do it every day when I lived there - very safe, very quick, completely doable! You can also walk to all the great restaurants and shopping of downtown Bethesda.
