My rent will go from $815.00 to $1025.00 if (and I won't) decide to renew my lease. I can't afford this!!!!

I believe this can be specific to the city you live in. If there is rent control then probably not. However, in most cities, if they wanted to raise your rent by $2000 they could. As long as they provide you the proper and legal notice they can price their apartments any way they please.

Thanks for your response! How do I find out if there is rent control in my area?

When you initially moved in did you move in under a special where your rent was reduced for a certain amount of time? If so then the speical was only good for that time frame and the rent would automatically go back up to the original rent without notice as the special should have had an ending date.

When I moved in, another property management was in place and I was on an affordable housing program. I moved here in 2005 and qualified again when my lease renewed in 2006. New management took over in November 2006 and I did not get a renewal in 2007 until November and lease was set to renew in May. When I renewed, the rent went from $715.00 to $736.00 and then to $815.00 a month later. My lease is up next month and they raised it to $1025.00.
