What do you do if the apartment company has sent you to collections without responding to your communication?

I recently moved out of an apartment - the same stains on the carpet were there when I moved in and clearly noted on the move-in checklist. The apartment complex is stating that the carpet was replaced while I lived there AND that it needed to be replaced after I moved out. The apartment manager will NOT provide me with an official receipt from the carpet company and states that it is "the carpet company's word against mine". They are keeping $250 of deposits and asking for $240 more all based on a lie of this carpet replacement. I have a lawyer who is willing to write the letters and call, but the apartment complex sent my case to a collection agency and I currently have nearly perfect credit - is it worth the hit to my credit and my time with the lawyer? Thanks for any advice.

I would fight this one tooth and nail. You need to challenge the charges, in writing, to the collection company. If you end up with a negative account from an apartment community on your credit, good luck renting anywhere else. Most management companies will consider that an instant decline. Your story won't matter to them. Fight this one.
