What is the safety of the area around El Cortez and downtown Winter Park? Crime rate etc.



I am interested in attending school in Winter Park and most of the big apartment complexes have terrible ratings. I do not want to be next door to the school anyway and this looks more like the type of place I would like to live. Its older and in a historic part of town, more likely to have community minded residents.

I wonder about crime though. Revitalized downtown areas are often still high in crime. The buildings may be better maintained and the residents are taking an active interest in their community but safety can still be sketchy. Can anyone who lives in the area tell me what its really like to live there? I want to know if there is drug activity, prostitution, frequent break-ins, vandalism, shootings etc. Basically could I walk my little 20lb dog at night unbothered or do I need a mastif?
