When you fill out the application for your new place there will be a paragraph that allows previous landlords to provide information about you. Most large management companies only allow the basics to be answered by their managers-amount of rent, times late, NSF's etc.. If it is a smaller company or private owner they may very well provide every little bit of info you could imagine, including their opinion of you.

Really all the can answer is factual information based upon actual tenant records. They can not dislcose personel opinions or anythng like that. However, as a manager in California for 14 years I have often used a trick question to feel out the manager.. Would you rent to them again.. A legit question but tricky to answer as a manager..

Your current landlord CANNOT disclose any personal information (including any facts) without your written legal consent. And it's vice versa! It is against the law. Even with rental verification BEFORE you rent, the past landlord needs to verify you've given written permission and you also have the right to limit in writing what can be disclosed. Call the Dept of Consumer Affairs if you feel violated.
